Quarterstaff

The quarterstaff is a wooden pole of between 7 and 8 feet in height.

To be graded as competent with this weapon you must answer the following theory questions:-
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of the quarterstaff?

      • Cheap and easy to make
      • Reach
    • Disadvantages
      • Wood (is not as strong as steel)
      • Space
  • Name the steel ends of a quarterstaff
    Butt caps
  • Name the most common, traditional, wood used for quarterstaves
    Oak
Demonstrate:-
  • The grips
    • Closed
    • Splayed
  • The attacks
    • Right shoulder
    • Right thigh
    • Left thigh
    • Left shoulder
And own leg bindings (early period) or hose and braies (late period). Extra credit can be gained by:-
  • These being made from natural fibres
  • Making these yourself
